The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has urged the government to ban the ‘shock chewing gum’ product which may be hazardous to consumers – especially children – as the toy is capable of giving an electric shock.
President SM Mohamed Idris today said a CAP survey found the product sold at RM6 each – available at night markets and toy shops.
“The product is very much like the Wrigley’s chewing gum with a piece of the gum sticking out to be pulled and once the piece is pulled a switch is triggered to send electrical current through the arm.
“In our survey, we also found that such toy is available in the form of a pen and pistol and those using the pen or pulling the trigger will feel the vibration.”
He said the toy could cause injuries as those exposed to the electrical shock would experience pain and the current might be harmful to those with health problems.
As such, Mohamed Idris urged the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry to immediately seize and ban the sale of these products.
