KUANTAN, 6 March 2018:
The number of rape cases in Pahang increased to 163 last year from 134 cases in 2016.
State police chief Datuk Seri Rosli Ab Rahman said 76 of the cases recorded last year were for statutory rape, a drop of two cases compared to the previous year.
“We have to remember that although these cases are consensual (sex), having involved in (sex) with students or teenagers under 16 is automatically considered as rape let alone by force or threat.
“Based on the records, more than 40% of the rape cases were committed by their own boyfriends followed by acquaintances (32%), strangers (5%), as well as fathers and uncles (4%).”
As such, Rosli called on all parties including the parents, schools and the community to focus on the matter and educate the students accordingly to control rape cases.
Prior to this, he said students had only been involved in bullying case but things had gotten worse as some of them had been involved in serious crimes such as robbery, rape and murder.
“In fact, the police and Education Department have also detected the circulation of pornographic images via mobile phones among the students.
“We have never take this lightly although (some) might find this an insignificant case,” he said, adding that the police would always monitor and take the necessary measures to tackle the issue.
