KUALA LUMPUR, 1 May 2018:
The oldest Malaysian mountaineer, James Lee Chong Meng – who is on his third attempt to conquer Mount Everest – arrived at Everest Base Camp (EBC) yesterday.
The 70-year-old Lee described the situation at EBC, located at 5,364m above sea level, “as extreme in many situations with freezing temperature and unreliable phone line”.
However, he stated that it was ‘so far, so good” , through a WhatsApp message.
Lee’s first attempt to scale Mount Everest was in May 2016, but he had to abort the climb in the final stage at Camp 3, at a height of 7,200m due to bad weather.
His second attempt in May last year was also aborted when he experienced chest pain and breathing difficulty at Camp 2, at a height of 5,545m.
Lee’s ‘Mount Everest Summit Challenge’, aimed at conquering the world’s tallest mountain, standing at 8,848m, is sponsored by Scientex Bhd.
Lee is carrying two important messages, namely to inspire people of all ages to capitalise on good health to remain active, and to draw attention to the need to preserve the environment.
