BAGAN SERAI, 27 Feb 2018:
The Perak Fisheries Department is targeting to release about two million various types of fish and fresh water prawns (udang galah) seeds into rivers and inactive mines in the state this year.
Director Zaki Mokri said this is to allow the species to breed and thereby provide income for land-based fishermen dependent on this source.
“These seeds can produce yield within six to eight months,” he said when met at a friendly networking programme for fishermen and those involved in aquaculture #myDOF Perak in Alor Pongsu here yesterday.
In the programme, 85 land based fishermen received a living allowance of RM200 each from the Fisheries Department involving a total of RM17,000.
The department also released 15,000 ‘ikan baung’ seeds worth RM6,000 into the Sungai Parit Haji Kassim near Alor Pongsu yesterday.
Zaki said most of the fish and ‘udang galah’ seeds were obtained from the Tapah Fisheries Development Centre, Enggor and Kampung Acheh, while seeds of fish such as ‘patin’, ‘jenahak’, ‘siakap’ and ‘lampam’ were obtained from private parties.
