U Mobile may be top telco in Malaysia by 2019

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 Dec 2017:

Amid a mature saturated market like Malaysia, where much of the population already have at least one mobile cellphone subscription – if not two or more – it would be hard to imagine any telecommunications firm suddenly surging ahead with revenue rising in double digit percentages.

But that’s exactly what U Mobile Sdn Bhd is poised to do – with a new co-branded service aimed at China tourists, which went on sale today.

The U Mobile WeChat Go prepaid SIM offers an almost irresistible package for visitors from mainland China – unlimited data to enjoy social messaging on the WeChat app and free Lingcod TV subscription.

This package is also expected to be alluring for locals too, said U Mobile chief marketing officer Jasmine Lee – as this latest package offers unlimited data to stream over 100,000 hours of high-definition movies, documentaries, and educational content out of China.

As a further benefit, the latest offering comes packed with 1GB of free roaming data for Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia plus 60 minutes’ worth of IDD calls to China or calls made in Malaysia.

Lee said the the WeChat deal was locked down in just three hectic weeks and from today, Chinese tourists may opt to purchase the prepaid SIM pack from Sunway Media retailers in China prior to travelling here.

She added that the SIM card will also be available at 138 U Mobile outlets in Malaysia as well as the various international airports in the country such as KLIA and klia2.

“The launch of U Mobile WeChat Go SIM is very timely as the Malaysian Tourism and Culture Ministry is targeting to attract eight million Chinese tourists by 2020.

“With more and more tourists from China visiting Malaysia, the U Mobile prepaid WeChat Go SIM is well positioned to meet all their connectivity demands.”

Beyond just telco revenue, U Mobile is also looking to tap other opportunities via the WeChat partnership.

“With the new U Mobile WeChat Go SIM, possibilities are endless as the whole WeChat ecosystem goes beyond just social messaging.

“Together with WeChat, we will work on packing even more benefits like mobile commerce into the WeChat Go SIM not just for Chinese tourists but for anyone who is a user of WeChat.”
