Syariah lawyers rapped for high fees

SHAH ALAM, 29 Jan 2019:

The Selangor Islamic Religious Council have urged syarie lawyers in the state not to flout the ethics of their profession by imposing overly high fees for their services.

Chairman Datuk Mohammed Khusrin Munawi said the success of a syarie lawyer should not only be based on profit and high fee but also the aspects of religious service, humanitarianism and welfare.

‘’I receive many complaints involving the flouting of syarie lawyer ethics specifically the issue of excessive fees, disciplinary problems and involvements in teachings which contravene the Sunni sect.

‘’As a result of the complaints, the council had issued orders for the culprits be deregistered, their law practice certificates be suspended and be given warnings,’’ he said at a ceremony to hand over accreditations and Syarie Lawyer Certificates here yesterday.

Commenting further, Mohammad Khusrin said, to date, the council did not plan to make any guideline on syarie lawyers’ fees but only hoped for co-operation from them against imposing overly high fees.
