SHAH ALAM, 22 Jan 2018:
The Bumiputera Petrol Station Dealers Association (Bumipeda) wants the government to carry out a review of the fuel sale commissions given to petrol station operators as it is no longer relevant with their current costs of operations.
President Datuk Abu Samah Bachik said a commissions of 12 sen per litre for petrol and 7 sen per litre for diesel – which had not been reviewed since 2008 – were no longer compatible with the increase in the costs of operation, which is caused by, among others, the implementation of the minimum wage of workers at RM1, 000 per month at the peninsula and RM920 for Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.
“Apart from the workers’ wages, the tariff rates of electricity and water, as well as commissions for credit card payments to banks, have also increased since 2008 and have to a certain extent increased the operating costs of petrol stations,” he told a press conference after the association’s first annual general meeting here today.
As such, he said Bumipeda would like to propose to the government to increase the commission rates to 8-10% for one litre of petrol and diesel sold so that petrol station operators could generate profits.
“I have received too many reports recently about petrol station operators suffering losses and having to close down their businesses due to this issue,” he said, adding that Bumipeda also wanted the government to enforce the circular on the self-service system issued in 2008 to ensure healthy competition among petrol station operators.
There are currently 2,700 Bumiputera petrol stations operators nationwide.
