Moscow metro introduces facial recognition payment system (video)

MOSCOW, 26 Aug 2021:

Travellers on Moscow’s metro, one of the largest and most luxurious in the world, will no longer need to purchase a ticket – thanks to a new facial recognition payment system.

The new payment method, FacePay, has been deployed on two lines, but local authorities said they plan to extend it to all Moscow metro stations if the project is successful.

To use the new system, passengers must register in an application and link a bank card to their virtual profile.

The facial recognition works with smart cameras that scan the passenger’s face and deduct the value of the trip.

Some 1,000 Muscovites have signed up for the experiment so far.

The Moscow subway, inaugurated in 1935, has 15 lines, 278 stations and is used by about nine million people daily.

The Moscow Transport Department is considering extending the facial recognition payment method to buses if this initial experiment works.
