Malaysia ready for new national car?

KUALA LUMPUR, 17 Nov 2018:

Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Yusof is optimistic Malaysia is now ready and has the ability to produce a new national car.

In fact, he said – with the strong support of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who established Proton – it was not impossible the aspiration is achieved again.

“We can learn from the past (Proton)..whatever weaknesses we had, we learn and improve through the use of the latest technology today,” he said as a guest in the Ruang Bicara programme on Bernama News Channel on Thursday night.

In June this year, Dr Mahathir spoke about the possibility of producing a new national car to replace Proton – which is no longer considered a national car brand after almost half its equity was sold to a foreign company Geely.

Mohd Redzuan said Proton was the starting point which produced many entrepreneurs who are now more ready, more competitive, with high integrity and with current automative technology, the national car project can be started any time.

On complaints that there were vendors who were less confident of the national car project but still interested in it, he said they should shift their paradigm to be more courageous and emulate other vendors who were doing well overseas.

He added there should be an environment or network of disciplined and competitive vendors.
