International schools asked for info in checks on parents’ income tax

KUALA LUMPUR, 20 April 2018:

The Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRBM) yesterday confirmed it had recently issued letters to the management of several international schools here.

IRBM said in a statement the content of the letters was to request the management of the schools to submit the relevant information regarding the parents of the students of the schools to IRBM.

“The request for information was made pursuant to Sections 80 and 81 of the Income Tax Act 1967.

“It’s a routine procedure by IRBM for the purpose of promoting voluntary tax compliance, reducing the risk of tax leakage and ensuring that the tax system is always upheld.”

The explanation was made following an email from an international school – which has gone viral on social media and addressed to the parents of the school’s students on the request made by IRBM.
