Electric vehicle charging at Petronas station along highways

KUALA LUMPUR, 25 Nov 2021:

A pilot project to install fast electric vehicle (EV) chargers at Petronas stations along highways will kick off by early next year.

This follows a memorandum of understanding signed between Petronas Dagangan Bhd with Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Sdn Bhd and EV Connection Sdn Bhd – operator of JomCharge network in Malaysia.

For the pilot phase in the first half of 2022, there will be five Petronas stations with these JomCharge DC Fast Chargers to enable end-to-end coverage between North-South Expressway and part of East-Coast Expressway

In a statement, Petronas marketing vice president Ahmad Adly Alias said EV charging facilities had been offered at Petronas stations since 2017.

“One opportunity that we have identified is the demand for faster charging facilities during long distance travel, especially along major highways. We view this investment in EV charging facilities a necessary step towards promoting the adoption of EVs in Malaysia.”

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia sales and marketing vice president Michael Jopp said: “This is in line with Mercedes-Benz’s global strategy to go all-electric by end of the decade where market conditions allow. Therefore, we are fully committed to invest in our local infrastructure together with Petronas and EV Connection to encourage the EV adoption amongst the Malaysian drivers.”
