KUALA LUMPUR, 21 March 2018:
The new Acts regulating e-hailing services – like Uber and Grabcar – will be gazetted in the second quarter of this year.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said they were the Land Public Transport Act 2017 and the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board Act 2017, which were passed by Parliament in July last year.
For now, she said the ministry has to look into several matters like fares, Puspakom checks and the division of authority between the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and the Road Transport Department before e-hailing regulations could be fully implemented.
“Only after these aspects have been looked into, will the acts be officially gazetted in the second quarter of this year,” she said after presenting approval letters for individual taxi permits to taxi drivers here yesterday.
SPAD acting chairman Tan Sri Isa Samad was present when 300 taxi drivers received their individual licenses from SPAD through the Taxi Industry Transformation Programme (TITP) .
Nancy said 74 of these drivers also received government cash grants of RM5,000 to buy new vehicles.
“The grants are part of the RM150 million which has been allocated by the government for eligible licence holders.
“Since the TITP was implemented, 2,493 taxi drivers have obtained individual licences and 82 government cash grants totalling RM410,000 awarded to eligible taxi drivers.”
