Delivery driver earned over RM10,000 in April

KUALA LUMPUR, 12 May 2020:

Delivery drivers completing orders for Lalamove, an on-demand delivery platform, saw incomes almost double last month amid the Covid-19 pandemic, said the firm in a statement today.

“One Lalamove delivery driver even managed to break the RM10,000 ceiling, far exceeding the average monthly income for the delivery sector.”

In the face of post-Covid-19 new normals, Lalamove said deliveries had become an attractive platform to generate income for unemployed Malaysians – including those whose livelihood has been impacted due to the Movement Control Order (MCO).

“Recently, it was reported that the number of unemployed Malaysians in March 2020 has risen to 610,500 which accounts for a 17.1% increase when compared to the same timeframe in 2019.”

But Lalamove driver Imran Isahak, 38, shared his success story: “I swapped my bike with a van so that I can deliver with Lalamove to make a living. Turns out it was one of the best decisions that I’ve ever made. I didn’t expect to earn as much as RM10,000 in a month with Lalamove, but here I am today!”

What made this feat more impressive is this amount earned was after the average 20% commission deducted by Lalamove – though Imran still had to bear the cost of fuel himself.

The firm offers a crowdsourcing approach to hiring delivery drivers – which enables owners of motorcycles, cars, vans, 4 x 4 trucks and lorries. While deliveries are conducted around the clock, most are handled during the waking hours and those who are doing this part-time can look forward to earning RM70-100 daily, depending on the distance covered and how many orders they get.

Sapri Tajuddin, 26, said in April alone, his income from completing delivery orders with Lalamove exceeded RM6,000 – which is almost double the figure of his average monthly income pre-MCO. “Before the MCO, I could earn up to a daily income of RM150 on average. But now, I can easily cash in RM280 per day.”

Lalamove said its vehicle drivers have also seen a rise in their monthly income as it reached up to RM7,000 during phase 2 and 3 of the MCO. “Other Lalamove drivers who are behind the wheel of vans, 4 x 4 trucks and lorries earned even more with incomes reaching up to RM9,000 during April.”

Managing director Shen Ong said the continuous growth in on-demand delivery will further generate income opportunities for the sector. “This presents an attractive prospect for the unemployed or for those who need to bolster their income during this difficult period.

“The encouraging rise in income of our top-performing delivery drivers is fantastic news for these hard-working drivers. We believe our platform can help them to weather these difficult times while also serving as a solution for those who are looking to generate extra income.”
