SUNWAY, 13 Nov 2018:
Folks commuting to the Sunway-Subang area can look forward to cheaper public transport from Dec 1 as fares for the BRT electric bus service will drop by up to 20%.
Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook today announced the lower rates during a visit to the BRT Complex here, as part of his familiarisation tour of public transport facilities within the Klang Valley.
Further to the lower BRT fares, commuters going cashless with the Touch n’ Go (TnG) cards will get a further discount – which will be announced by month-end.
Loke said the RM100 monthly concession card announced during the 2019 Budget will also include travel on BRT services, offering seamless convenience for the Malaysian public.
He said the RM100 monthly concession will use the TnG feature in MyKads – to ensure only Malaysian residents qualify for cheaper public transport fares.
“There will be no separate concession card for this RM100 monthly concession for travel on all Rapid services on buses, BRT, LRT, MRT and monorail. Top-ups will be conducted on the MyKad.”
Subang Jaya assemblywoman Michelle Ng Mei Sze welcomed the lower BRT fares, saying it will benefit many students who attend colleges in the neighbourhood as well as residents and visitors.
“This will also help reduce traffic congestion in the area as it is now cheaper and more convenient to use the BRT service instead of driving.”
Loke said the lower fares should hopefully increase BRT ridership, which now has grown to about 11,000 daily compared to about 5,000 daily when fares were first imposed in 2015.
“When the BRT service was free during the initial two months, ridership was about 12,000 daily. We look forward to ridership passing this number with the lower fares.”
