Members of the public, especially traders, are advised to apply the feel, look and tilt method before accepting any banknotes to avoid ending up with counterfeit money.
Bank Negara Malaysia Penang office chief, Hasjun Hashim said although the number of fake money cases in the country was still low, traders should have basic knowledge of banknote features to avoid becoming victims of fraud.
“The ringgit currency note has 10 security features that the public can detect, such as intaglio print (raised printing effect), watermark portrait, and woven security thread,” she told reporters at a currency briefing programme organised by BNM at the Changlun night market, here, yesterday.
She said BNM had also developed the ‘My Ringgit’ application available on the Google Playstore to help users detect counterfeit notes.
Meanwhile, Kubang Pasu District Traders and Night Market Association chairman, Shaimi Ahmad said he hoped the programme organised by BNM could help avoid traders and the public from being duped and incurring losses.
