Apple MacBook Pro recall – batteries may catch fire

CUPERTINO, 21 June 2019:

Apple has announced a voluntary recall for 15-inch MacBook Pro units sold primarily between September 2015 and February 2017 – because the battery “may overheat and pose a safety risk”.

Owners are advised to immediately stop using affected computers and have the battery replaced, free of charge. To check if the computer is affected, Apple has set up a specific webpage for owners to input serial numbers to confirm eligibility for battery replacements.

“This worldwide Apple programme doesn’t extend the standard warranty coverage of the 15-inch MacBook Pro.

“The recall does not affect any other 15-inch MacBook Pro units or other Mac notebooks.”

Separately, Google is reportedly giving up on producing own tablets, but will keep launching new phone and laptops.

Rick Osterloh, senior vice president of devices & services tweeted: “Hey, it’s true…Google’s HARDWARE team will be solely focused on building laptops moving forward, but make no mistake, Android & Chrome OS teams are 100% committed for the long-run on working with our partners on tablets for all segments of the market (consumer, enterprise, edu)”.
