SUBANG JAYA, 19 Aug 2017:
Thousands of durian lovers showed up for Jom Durian 10 at The Summit USJ today and raised close to RM150,000 to help fulfil wishes of terminally ill children across the country.
Dubbed the largest and longest consecutive running charity durian fest ever hosted in the country, Jom Durian 10 helps raise funds for the Children’s Wish Society (CWS) of Malaysia – a Subang Jaya-based national charity which brings a smile back to ailing children by fulfilling their wishes.
Serving up almost six tonnes of durian over two days, Jom Durian 10 brings the best of the King of Fruits to delight its corporate sponsors and members of the public – who can’t wait to get their hands on Malaysia’s favourite fruit while helping to raise funds for the charity.
Summit Subang USJ management corporation chairman K.C. Wong said this was the fifth year the shopping mall had taken on the social responsibility to support CWS Malaysia – which has made so much of a difference across the country, fulfilling wishes of terminally ill children.
“This partnership with CWS Malaysia is the biggest for Summit USJ and i can say it is one of the most meaningful initiatives that we as a community shopping mall have ever ventured into.
“Every single effort put into making this a success year-after-year is well worth the drops of sweat, energy and funds we have pumped into this event.
“Our corporate sponsors and members of the public will get to enjoy the best money can buy durians. Despite the hike in durian prices in recent times, we decided to continue with this annual event because it is an important fundraiser for the society to carry out their work.”
Wong said more than 2,000 people are expected to attend the two-day charity durian fest.
CWS Malaysia vice president Teoh Teik Hoong said the charity event is a major lifeline for the society to carry out its work across the country.
“Our Jom Durian eat-all-you-can charity series over the last 10 years has helped us fulfil close to 700 wishes across the country investing almost RM3 million to bring smiles back to ailing children who had a wish to be fulfilled.
“CWS is a 100% volunteer-run charity. Our board members and volunteers devote their time and energy to fulfil wishes of ailing children who needed a smile most. The support we receive annually from Jom Durian helps us to reach out to ailing children across the country.”
Teoh said the society would continue its mission despite all challenges it faced, especially with the economic hurdles the country was facing.
“We have our mission all set out. We will face whatever challenges that come our way and take the bull by its horns. We cannot retreat because if we do, the children who face their bleakest hour will not get their wishes fulfilled.
“We are thankful with the continuous support from Summit USJ and all our corporate partners who have stayed with us side-by-side all through the year. We are also very grateful to the members of the public who have travelled from near and far to support this event.”
